Netflix and Macbeth?
What would I recommend that Lady Macbeth watch on Netflix?
Santa Clarita Diet
Plot: Santa Clarita Diet is about Sheila, a regular mom from Santa Clarita California and her normal life with her family. Then suddenly she is hit with an illness that turns her into a zombie. This then begins her killing spree rampage (with help from her husband). They go around murdering random people so that Sheila wont go hungry. Also, at the same time Joel and his daughter are searching for a cure to this strange illness.
Why?
I think this show would be perfect for Lady Macbeth because of the powerful female lead, and how she kills people with the help of her husband. This is very similar to Lady Macbeth because she is a very strong and powerful woman, who manipulates her husband into killing Duncan with her.
Plot: This season of AMHS takes places at the Hotel Cortez, a haunted hotel in California. There a detective named John Lowe stays, and he discovers the secret behind the hotel. The hotel draws the detective because of a thread of murders committed all of which are inspired by the Ten Commandments .Including the backstory of all these strange characters that he meets, as well as the truth behind the owner of the hotel: Elizabeth (The Countess).
Why? One of the main characters of the season is a woman named The Countess (Elizabeth). She is the head of the hotel and maintains all of the power in the hotel. She also takes children and turns them into vampires because she wants children of her own. She is manipulative with all of the men she forms relationships with and power hungry. This character very closely resembles Lady Macbeth. Due to the fact that Lady Macbeth is power hungry, and this led her to manipulate her husband into killing Duncan. Also because she wanted a child but could never have one similarly to how The Countess likes children. I think Lady Macbeth would enjoy this season because she would able to connect to this character.
Parks and Recreation
Plot: Leslie Knope, a part of the Parks and Recreation department in Indiana. She hopes to make her town of Pawnee beautiful again by introducing a new park, as well as further her career. The show follows her obstacles in getting this new park made as well as her relationships with interesting characters.
Why? I feel like Lady Macbeth would be able to connect to the main character Leslie because they both are determined woman trying to accomplish something in this male dominated world(Unsex me? or maybe not?). I feel like she would love Leslie's perseverance in wanting to something done, as well as her ability to do it despite challenges as a woman.
13 reasons why
Plot: This show is about a Clay Jensen, listening to 13 tapes left by Hannah Baker all of which gives reasons to why she committed suicide. As he listens to the tapes he begins to realize that some people that are on those tapes are not what they portray themselves as.
Why? This show connects to Lady Macbeth's life because at the end of the play, she also commits suicide. It is implied that the reasoning is due to her guilt over the Duncan murder. This show deals with consequences to people's actions and how people choose to deal with situations, such as how LMB subconscious revealed itself through her sleep walking.
I loved all of your suggestions, they're super creative!! Most people for this blog post tended to lean towards shows that were literally about stealing the throne of a king, but I enjoyed how you strayed from this and picked shows like Parks and Rec., and Santa Clarita Diet where you wouldn't really see the connection to something like Macbeth the first time you watch it. I also used a season of American Horror Story for one of my recommendations...I think it's interesting how a lot of the seasons have hidden meanings that connect to Macbeth. I think that this shows that Macbeth had a lot of general themes that can be related to a lot of different stories.
ReplyDeleteI thought all of your recommendations were very insightful and creative. I wouldn't have thought to recommend some of these shows to Lady M at first but you gave great explanations and connections for all of them, I especially liked the parks and rec recommendation! Good job!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how unique your recommendations are. These characters have a lot of similar attributes to LM. I thought about doing 13 Reasons Why but couldn't think of enough reasons to relate it to LM, but you did a great job of doing so and explaining her feelings of guilt and fear. This is great!
ReplyDeleteSanta Clarita Diet is a great comparison to Lady Macbeth. She goes on a killing spree with the help of husband. The only difference is how Macbeth eventually takes over the killing spree. In the case of Santa Clarita Diet, the husband would become the zombie and the wife would find the cure, going back to being a normal woman.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading the shows you picked out and I think all of the connections are spot on! In particular I really liked your justification for Parks and Rec. I wanted to do that one as a tv show for my list but I couldn't think of how it could relate to my character Macbeth but I completely agree that Leslie Knope is ambitious in similarity to Lady Macbeth! I also thought the 13 reasons why choice was interesting and would have been intriguing to see more as to how fate vs. choice plays into both that show and Macbeth. Overall, great job!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the shows that you picked. They're all super creative, and I like how you focused on shows with a female lead. I also picked 13 Reasons Why, with the same connection, and I thought all of your other choices were super creative. I thought your connection with Parks and Rec was the best because it is not something you would typically think of. I think it is very interesting how you can connect something from so lone ago to things that are more modern, and even funny. Great post!!
